317 - Flashing Colored Lights, Sirens, and Emergency Vehicles

Sirens

Law enforcement, Fire Department, and Medical services owned vehicles may utilize an audible warning device while responding to a call or in times where they must warn or clear traffic from an area in the affects of their duties. For the purpose of this section an electronic airhorn is not considered to be a siren. A siren shall be defined as a tone that alters in pitch as it is used to get attention from the roadgoing public.

Flashing or revolving lights:

No vehicle except those listed in this section may operate flashing or revolving lights on a roadway.

Red

Vehicles owned by Fire and medical service shall utilize red flashing or revolving lights. At the department's discretion, Law Enforcement agencies may also utilize red lights in combination with blue lights.

Blue

Law enforcement vehicles are required to have a minimum of 1 forward facing blue flashing or revolving light.

The following vehicles shall be permitted to operate blue flashing or revolving lights:

  • Vehicles owned by certified Law Enforcement agencies shall use blue flashing or revolving lights.

Amber/Orange/Yellow

The following vehicles shall be permitted to operate amber, orange, or yellow flashing or revolving lights:

  • Any vehicle authorized to operated red or blue lights

  • Public works, Road works, or other construction companies

  • Towing companies

  • Vehicles used for oversized load hauling or piloting

  • Any vehicle working near or on a roadway.

Purple

The following vehicles shall be permitted to operate purple flashing or revolving lights:

  • Vehicles part of a funeral processions

  • Off-duty and volunteer Fire and EMS personnel

Green

The following vehicles shall be permitted to operate green flashing or revolving lights:

  • Vehicles permitted to utilize red or blue lights.

  • Vehicles permitted to use Amber/orange/yellow lights.

White

Any vehicle may use white lights, White lights shall not be used in a manner that would be distracting or disorienting to members of the roadgoing public.
